JP Chenet Sauvignon Blanc (France)

Bubbly’s take

Can you not tell from the size of the bottle?? We picked this one up when it was our turn to cook and we needed to make pasta in flash (- a nice linguine recipe from Gino D’Campo). This punchy and fruity Sauvignon Blanc is widely available, and brought a deep and quenching flavour to dinner. Our only regret was not buying a bigger bottle. It’s the sort of wine to have when friends come over for a meal – you can use it as an apéritif, you can sip it while you’re cooking and you may even be able to add a splosh or two to your simmering dish.

Would go well with

Well, we used it to make a fishy linguine. We found this Sauvignon Blanc provided some balance to the not-so-subtle sardine, lemon and chilli we added to this (… we absolutely did deviate from recipe but that’s the way we cook!). Consequently, when used as an ingredient, we believe this wine can hold its own against stronger flavours. Even when used as a serving wine, we feel this is capable of reconciling itself with other heavier pasta-based dishes (- think lasagne, cannelloni or ravioli).

Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)

Bubbly’s take

So… while we did (in fact) drink this wine, we used it as an additional ingredient in a yummy vegetarian paella. It’s a crisp, refreshing and punchy Sauvignon Blanc, from a well-recognised winery. It’s definitely not just any old “cooking wine”. This Sauvignon Blanc is something to enjoy before cooking, while cooking and after cooking, over carefree chatter and good food.

Would go well with

Mediterranean cuisine. As noted, we think this Sauvignon Blanc makes a robust cooking wine hence it would go well in a paella, risotto or lighter pasta dish. It’s also one of those wines that you really want to keep on standby, with a bottle or two on the rack for recipes and nights in.

La Burgondie Bourgogne Aligoté (France)

Bubbly’s take

This crisp white wine is produced by a relatively new wine cooperative that harvests wine across a large region extending between Dijon and Lyon, with an express and equitable commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. The Aligoté carries a fresh, brisk and lemony flavour. It’s a refreshingly dry wine that is a pleasure to drink when suitably chilled.

Would well with…

Cheese. We were very pleased to both drink and cook with this wine. The Aligoté made a perfect addition to a traditional Swiss-style fondue, reconciling several rather flavoursome cheeses in a rich and satisfying meal (which we also enjoyed with some fizz!):

Small and Small Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)

Bubbly’s take

This refreshing Sauvignon Blanc hails from a very small Marlborough winery (- no pun intended; Claudia Small and Bill Small are the masterminds behind it). Despite this wine’s humble origins, it made a big splash with us. Being part of the New World, Small and Small have produced a playful and original Sauvignon Blanc, with a fruity personality. We traced notes of melon and citrus in this bold wine.

Would go well with

A Caesar salad, bread, tapas or canapés. But whether you have it with nibbles or not, we think this wine is best enjoyed with good company.

Gianfranco a Serena Cordero Gavi del di Gavi (Italy)

Bubbly’s take…

This stunning Gavi di Gavi brings a crisp, zesty and pleasing taste to the palate. Best served suitably-chilled, this wine is both delicate and characterful. The Gavi region has an esteemed wine-producing reputation, having cultivated its signature Cortese grapes since the 17th century. A real pleasure to share and drink, we loved this wine and look forward to enjoying more of it amongst friends and family.

Would go well with

A balmy summer’s evening. As a fairly complex white wine, we think this Gavi di Gavi would pair splendidly with most fish or vegetarian dishes but nothing too overwhelming – you’ll definitely want to savour this one.

Contevedo Edición Orgánica Cava Brut

Bubbly’s take

Extremely well-priced and marketed as an organic Cava, it is hard to fault this sparkling at first blush. Out of the bottle, this wine has an enticing shade of citrus and some solid effervescence. It brings a dry, refreshing and zesty taste to the palate. This is a versatile Cava and one we’ve enjoyed both casually and at meal times.

Would go well with…

Most things. Try it with food, and try it with friends or family. But also try it by yourself and on its own. We found this to be both a social and solitary Cava, suitable whatever the mood and the occasion.

Freixenet Cordon Negro Gran Selección Cava

Bubbly’s take

In our view, Freixenet represent one of the most successful Cava franchises. By successful, we mean Freixenet have combined their well-established wine-making tradition with a forward-looking and entrepreneurial approach to yield some of the most accessible and acclaimed Cavas. With over 100 years’ of experience in the viticulture business, the Freixenet dynasty is celebrated throughout the world and known to account for around 80% of Spain’s Cava exports.

We hope to add some more reviews of the Freixenet collection in the near future but we thought we would start with the iconic Gran Selección Cava. This quintessentially dry Cava entered the sparkling wine market back in the 1970s, with its characteristic frosted-black bottle. Both the wine and the bottle, in our opinion, represent a timeless and progressive contribution to the Cava industry.

Would go well with...

Lot’s of things and by itself! We’ve enjoyed the Gran Selección Cava on many occasions (… and whether for an occasion of not). It is a very fitting wine for most Mediterranean dishes but it is perfectly enjoyable without. This proud and punchy Cava brings back warm memories of holidays with friends and family in Spain. That said, more recently, we enjoyed a bottle of this with some homemade pesto polenta lasagna – an excellent fusion of good Spanish wine and wholesome Italian food:

Freixenet Cordon Rosado Gran Selección Cava

Bubbly’s take

Well, well, well… we made good on our pledge (below) and we found another great Freixenet to feature – this time it’s a rosé Cava. We were completely surprised by this lovely sparkling wine – the Rosado is surprisingly fruity and refreshing. It bears a dry yet lilting flavour, paying credence to its blend of Terpat and Garnache grapes. The Rosado looks great, it tastes great and it’s a great idea to have a bottle of this ready and chilled on a warm summer day. A pleasant and very satisfying addition to the Freixenet collection.

Would go well with

Fish. Of course, we think the Rosado could also be enjoyed by itself on a sunny afternoon or evening. The depth and breadth of the wine’s flavour mean there is plenty to be explored. That said, we can’t help but feel this Cava would be best-placed alongside tapas – we’re thinking croquettes, tostadas, padron peppers, manchego and patatas bravas!

Tanners Brut Cava

Bubbly’s take

We feel this one could turn into one of our Cava staples. Tanners are are a well-established and -versed provincial wine merchants, with an intriguing history and excellent selection of wines. They offer this signature Cava under their name and with good reason. It is a strong and frothy wine, with a well-balanced flavour. We would see this as one of our “go-to” sparklings that we enjoy when we just can’t decide what to have. It is a characteristic Spanish Cava rightly labelled by an esteemed British wine merchant.

Would go well with

Most things. We had this on one of our homemade pizza nights so we’re thinking it makes good pairing with Mediterranean dishes.

Crémant de Limoux Rosé (France)

Bubbly’s take

This striking Brut is widely available in Tesco. It’s light, fruity and very well-received. If you want to find a solid rosé Crémant without any fuss then we think this one could fit the bill.

Would go well with

We enjoyed this Crémant with a lovely cheese-based pasta dish. However, we think this could also be enjoyed as a wonderful apéritif with friends.
